4. CO2 AND THE ENVIROMENT
Returns from helping the environment
Facts
The facts are simple:
• the concentration of certain greenhouse gases, particularly carbon
dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), is increasing in the atmosphere. Concentrations
of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) have gone from 280 ppm (parts per
million) to 370 ppm over the last 150 years;
• The Earth's average temperature, has been gradually rising over the last century.
Predicting climate change
There is a great deal of uncertainty in the predictions developed by
models. However, the ability of these models to reproduce current climatic
conditions makes us fairly confident in their ability to predict what
the climate will be like in the future. The normal scenario is based
on an estimate of the concentration of carbon dioxide at twice the pre-industrial
concentration (2 x CO2).
Due to the very nature of the environmental factors surrounding some
crop and forestry property acquisitions carbon credits can in some cases
be traded.
Carbon credits are a way for larger carbon producing companies to offset
there carbon footprint by buying credits.
The value of 1 ton of carbon is widely seen as needing to double in
value over the next few years.
Dependant on the area and the production of agricultural and forestry
investment carbon credits can be a way to add additional revenue.
